Just 2 days before Christmas in 1999, the Summerall’s welcomed their new baby boy, Jarrett, into the world. A few hours after birth, an alert nurse noticed Jarrett’s color changing and rushed him to NICU. Within an hour, Jarrett was diagnosed with a congenital heart defect known as TGA – transposition of the greater arteries. Having this condition means that the body isn’t receiving enough oxygen, and this can often lead to brain damage.

Jarrett was immediately taken to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston. His condition was assessed and a few days later, a team of highly-skilled surgeons worked on Jarrett’s heart. The operation was successful, and on January 4th, the Summerall’s returned to their home in Albany, GA. Jarrett now leads a completely normal life. He has no major side-effects from his heart defect except for a mild murmur which is monitored yearly by his pediatric cardiologist. Jarrett loves to ride his bike and four-wheeler, hunt, and play baseball. And if you ask the Summerall’s how they feel about their son, they’ll tell you – “Jarrett is truly a testimony that miracles happen every day!”

The American Heart Association is the largest voluntary health organization working to prevent, treat and defeat heart disease, stroke and other cardiovascular diseases. These diseases, the Nation's No.1 and No.3 killers, claim more than 865,000 American lives a year. Thanks to all our walkers, donors and volunteers who have accepted the challenge to help fight heart disease and stroke. We cannot achieve our mission without each one of you!
