As many of you know, our son Jarrett was born two days before Christmas of 1999 with a congenital heart defect known as transposition of the great arteries (aka TGA). To put it simply, his coronary and pulmonary arteries were reversed and his body wasn't receiving the oxygen it needed. Shortly after birth, Jarrett began turning purple and was rushed to the NICU for further testing. He was diagnosed with TGA at less than three hours old and was immediately transported to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston. At four days old, two days after Christmas, he underwent open-heart surgery and recovered beautifully. Today, Jarrett is an active 14 year-old who enjoys the outdoors and hanging out with friends. He was even able to play football this year and, so far, has had no restrictions placed on his physical activity. As an added blessing, he is on no medication and has had no other surgeries or invasive procedures. He has yearly visits to a pediatric cardiologist for EKG's and echocardiograms to make sure everything is pumping as it should. If it weren't for the dedication of the AHA to fund research and provide equipment for doctors and medical staff, there is no telling where Jarrett and the thousands of children born with CHD's would be. To say the least, we are incredibly grateful and thankful for what the AHA has done and will continue to do on behalf of all of those who battle heart disease, stroke, and congenital heart defects!
